!!!error: Indecipherable SUB-paragraph formatting!!! “ Toy ota has filed a patent for a virtual sunroof that could show moving images of the car’s exterior. This patent is for a ceiling mounted display that would essentially function like a sunroof, showing the environment above you as you drive along via a camera feed. It wouldn’t necessarily show an exact image of the outside, but would instead combine the foreground, mid-ground and background layers, scrolling them at different speeds to create the illusion of speed. This wouldn’t be so much for the passengers to look out of, then, as it would be to create an illusion of speed for the driver and passengers.

Kinja'd!!!

It may seem like a bit of a silly, over engineered invention but we get the feeling that automakers will begin to look at different gimmicks like these in order to make the experience of driving electric vehicles more visceral or exciting. This particular invention could give you the feeling of riding in a convertible, in theory, making the driving experience a bit more fun and engaging. This technology might also be used to create a sense of airiness in an otherwise tight and cramped autonomous pod.

What’s wrong with a regular/panoramic sunroof and windows?

Right up there with self-closing doors, as modern conveniences where the benefit does not outweigh the cost

There’s a real benefit to removing the windows and other holes   from pressurized aircraft - just ask DeH avilland about that.

The sunroof thing is idiotic though.

We’ll see how the people who pay money to keep the planes flying in the first place react to that. Passenger comfort should factor into the business decision I would think, even if there are advantages for the engineering based decision.

But then again, based on Airlines’ past behavior, I wouldn’t be surprised if this is the future of economy Air travel

Well, if the ticket was $5 cheaper with that seating configuration, you know passengers would go for it.

With the screens though, you can have far bigger “ windows” than   aircraft currently have - so many would actually see a benefit from it, not a penalty.

Well improving aero on cars is good, taking off mirrors that stick out . Someone needs to make the Aptera, they were amazing and should be an electric car, about 70% of mpgs/energy  is moving through the air as speed increases.

Fair enough. I don’t have kids and I don’t get it. I think if I had one, I’d be sick to death of waiting for it to open/close when I could’ve done it manually. And if that foot-open sensor thing ever  doesn’t work I’ll burn the car to the ground.

I can see several advantages:

No chance of a leaky sunroof.

Less weight than a sunroof (although heavier than a hardtop)

No additional streng thening/stiffening required due to a big hole in the roof.

No problems with additional heat gain due to a big piece of glass substituting for your roof - a big deal in the southern states.

If the “sunroof” breaks, it’s just disappointing and not an emergency.

No fear of a glass roof breaking if you’re caught in a hail storm.

Putting these in an airplane is simultaneously awesome and cruel. Imagine being afraid of heights and being stuck on a plane equipped with these. Personally, I’d like to see them installed on the floor.
